The Volkswagen Golf is categorized as a small family car manufactured by the German automaker Volkswagen. It was first released in 1974. The car was projected in many countries of the world offered in many different bodystyle and with numerous nameplates such as in the United States of America it was known as the Volkswagen Rabbit and as Mk1 and Mk5 in Canada and in Mexico it was known as Volkswagen Caribe.

The Golf MK1, the original one was based on a front-wheel drive. In history, the Golf is the Volkswagen’s best-selling model and the world’s second best-selling model. It was initially offered in three-door hatchback style. Other models were available in a 5-door hatchback, convertible, station wagon and notchback sedan. It has been given names such as Volkswagen Bora, Volkswagen Jetta and Volkswagen Vento.

The 2010 MK6 Golf is offered in both five and six speed manual transmission, also six or seven speed DSG (Dual Clutch) transmission options. In North America, the MK5 model was available for sale as the Rabbit in 2006 till 2009. The Volkswagen name plate was brought back in 2010. The 2010 Volkswagen was charged with a turbocharged I-4 clean diesel engine.

The GTI model is charged with a turbocharged I-4 TSI gasoline engine whereas the Golf R is charged with a turbocharged TFSI I-4 engine. The range of all three engines can be combined with a 6-speed manual transmission or a DSG dual-clutch 6-speed automatic offered in either a three-door configuration or a five-door configuration.

The 2010 Volkswagen Golf was released in the UK in the very beginning of 2009 while in North America it was released as the 2010 Golf instead of Rabbit. Later the MK6 also released a new model based on a diesel engine option for the North American market. The Volkswagen Golf Mk6 is ranked as the IIHS Top Safety Pick of 2012.

The Volkswagen Golf has numerously produced electric models over the generations. The first one was manufactured in 1970s when the Volkswagen converted a standard Golf Mk1 into an electric power. Along with the release of the Golf Mk3, the Volkswagen kept introducing its limited number of CityStromer electric cars. These were based on the lead–acid battery packs and Siemens-based AC drive system.

The Volkswagen launched twenty Golf Variant twinDRIVE that are plug-in hybrid electric vehicles. These research-based all-electric range cars were charged with internal combustion engines. There were ten vehicles that were charged with batteries that are American-German manufactured from GAIA with cathode type nickel cobalt aluminium dioxide while the other ten were charged with lithium-ion batteries made from the nickel manganese cobalt(NMC) cathodes. These were the product of the Korean-German joint venture SB LiMotive. The engines are supported with the electric heating system when there is a low temperature. On the fully charged battery, the Golf Variant twinDRIVE is capable of sharing the pure electrical energy used for driving.
