Overview

Since 1984, the Toyota 4-Runner has been produced in Texas and marketed in North America. In addition to, the Toyota 4-Runner runs in the Toyota plant in the US state of Texas. By 2009, an identical model under the model designation Toyota Hilux Surf also emerged in Japan. In the short term, the Toyota 4-Runner from this series was also available in Europe.


First Generation Specs

In the coming years, various changes were made to the design and the technology, so that the vehicle improved more and more into the class of a large SUV. Changes in the First Series

From 1986 onwards, the front axle brakes were exchanged for an independent suspension. In addition, the front track broadened by 76 millimeters. This gave the car a better driving stability and moved more comfortably across the road while the GRP roofs were available exclusively in white or black. Until 1986, it was usual in the USA to deliver the Toyota 4-Runner with only two seats. Thus it could be registered as a commercial vehicle. This had considerable advantages for the buyers because the import tariff was significantly lower than for normal passenger cars. The US dealers later fitted the vehicles with seat backrests and safety belts so that they could also be marketed as recreational vehicles.


In 1988, the manufacturer of the Toyota 4-Runner introduced a 3 liter V6 engine. The vehicles had a reinforced rear axle differential and a completely new type of transmission. In addition, the vehicles were equipped with great features, which provided more running friction.


The Second Generation Brought Changes

Although the chassis of the pick-up remained the basis for the Toyota 4-Runner, but with the new model generation there was an independent body. This also changed the appearance of the car. The car now had five doors. The axle constructions and the engines, however, were taken over from the previous models. In 1992 there were some optical revisions. The 4-runner also then got module headlights.


More Luxury From The Mid-Nineties

While the revisions of the 80s and early 1990s focused mainly on the production quality and optional special equipment for the Toyota 4-Runner, Toyota planned to established the car as a SUV with more luxury in the mid-nineties. Visually, the Toyota 4-Runner did not differ from the previous model. However, it got a new chassis and the innovative technology had nothing in common with the earlier pickup. New engines made the drive more versatile.
