In 1986 VW took over the company Seat, which operated as an independent subsidiary. Later, Skoda also entered the brand family of the VW Group.

With the development of the VW Lupo, Volkswagen succeeded in building the first 3-liter production car. The takeover of Bentley Motorcars Limited enabled the ascent to the luxury class segment. Today three different brand families are grouped together in the Volkswagen Group: VW unites Volkswagen cars, Skoda, Bentley and Bugatti. The second group consists of the brands Audi, Seat and Lamborghini, the third is represented by the independent group of commercial vehicles.
