This radical engine technology can seamlessly switch between conventional combustion and compression ignition, using the spark plug to activate both types of combustion in different ways. Due to SPCCI, a spite intake process act as a catalyst to develop two separate zones to assure a reliable air-fuel blend. First, in the intake phase, a very lean mixture of petrol is injected into the combustion chamber, then in the compression phase, an injection of atomized fuel is send directly around the spark plug.

 

The small injection of atomized fuel directly around the spark plug creates a richer core. When the spark plug emits the spark, it ignites this core of air and gasoline. This increases the pressure in the chamber to a point where the lean mixture ignites quickly. Since the engine runs most of the time in a very efficient mode, the SPCCI system intervenes at virtually all engine speeds except cold start, warm-up, and very high load. Under such circumstances, the engine seamlessly switches to normal operation, igniting the combustion of a conventional gas/air blend.
