Isuzu Impulse - Amazing And Unique Sport Car

Isuzu Impulse is a sporty 3-door liftback coupe produced by Isuzu from 1981 to 1992.
In 1978, ISUZU planned to design a unique sport car and therefore made a contract with the Giorgetto Giugiaro for the design. The resulting product was released in 1979 in Tokyo Motor Show and was called as Copernican revolution reflecting a mix of different designs of the car. Isuzu after slight changes to the design approved it and began its production.


FIRST GENERATION OF ISUZU IMPULSE (1980 – 1990)

For the US market, this vehicle was released as the Impulse in 1983. For the 1983 and 1984 model the 2.0 L SOHC I4 engine was offered. The 1988 model year had many modifications. The engine used was a 2.3 L SOHC I4 engine.


In the United States market it was advertised as “everything standard” signifying that all the similar features are offered on the impulses and only two models were made available with slightly different options on the models such as non-turbo and Turbo.


However there are some especial models available too such as the RS model of the 1987, offered in single body color that is white with some pewter color touches. 1989 model year, a Special Edition non-turbo that was made available with interior trim and Turbo model wheels. The car was advertised and sold under the name the Piazza in Australia and Europe. In the United Kingdom, it was only available in one single model the turbo with 2.0 Turbocharged engine. The piazza had a very Problematic start in the UK market. It was sold on considerable lower prices.


In Australia the piazza was released very late and was only available in Turbo form.
Performance of the Turbo model was as good as Mitsubishi Starion or Dodge Conquest. Towards the end of the 1989 model year, the second generation impulse took place of the impulse in the United States market. However the manufacturing and selling of the first generation model of the Isuzu piazza was continued towards the end of 1991 in Japan.


SECOND GENERATION OF ISUZU IMPULSE (1990 T0 1992)

The second model was released with a sportier model called the Storm also known as Gemini Coupe in Japan. The exterior designs has influences drew from that of the Lotus Elan M100.


In 1989 a three-door hatchback was released as the Impulse XS model for the 1990.it was made available in only front-wheel drive. A more modified model the Impulse RS was released with a turbo charged engine as a 1991 model. Latter a wagon back model was also released as 1991 model that was offered with an aspirated 1.6 L engine. In 1992, a 1.8 L engine took place of the base engine and the Turbo engine was made redundant. The general Motors heading the half of Isuzu along with the Lotus Cars. For the Lotus Elan M100  Lotus opted for a 1.6 L engine which winded up in the Impulse. For improving the suspension of the impulse, Lotus was brought into a contract and therefore the second generation impulse was based on the Lotus Suspension.


A number of factors including emissions issues, safety against crash and Japanese economic bubble pushed the Isuzu out of the car competition and was eventually ended its production in 1993.
