Toyota Alphard is a fantastic option in the premium multipurpose vehicle (MPV) category. The MPV is an improvement on the conventional minivan, which was first introduced in the 1990s. The minivan, popular with moms, quickly developed an image as a slower car meant for older people.

To further showcase the adaptability of the vehicle, the image was revamped in the 1990s. Due to the increased headroom and capacity for both passengers and freight, MPVs started to compete with classic limousines once they were equipped with luxury amenities

As a result, affluent drivers coveted MPVs. More powerful drive trains and 4WD further enhanced the image of the MPVs.

Overview

Toyota released its premium MPV, the Alphard, in 2002. The Toyota Alphard has been one of Tanzania most popular 8-seater big luxury minivans for the past 20 years. It was initially released in 2002 to compete directly with the Nissan Elgrand comparably.

The Alphard, presently in its third iteration, also served as the model for the 2008 launch of the Toyota Vellfire. The AH10 model of the first generation was produced between 2002 and 2008, while the AH20 model of the second generation was produced between 2008 and 2015. 2015 saw the launch of the AH30 third-generation Alphard models.

So why not import one of the other big minivans on the market instead of a Toyota Alphard? Find out by reading on.

Engine

Toyota provided both a V6 and an inline four-cylinder engine. The Alphard products offer a benefit in terms of fuel efficiency due to their smaller engines and lower weight.

A four-speed automatic transmission is available with either the 2.4L, 160 HP inline four-cylinder model CBA-ANH10W or the 3.0L, 220 HP V6 model TA-MNH10W engines from Toyota. Alphard hybrid models and five-speed gearboxes wer are not made available until after 2004.

A 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine and CVT automatic transmission work together to power our Alphard. A 2.4-liter hybrid vehicle is both more powerful and efficient than a 3.5-liter six-cylinder choice in terms of power.

The 2.4-liters 125kW and 224Nm output is a tad underwhelming for a car of this size. Although the performance is adequate, the engine will have to work harder when traveling up hills if you load it up with passengers and luggage.

Interior

The Alphard interior has three rows, with complete bucket seats in the front and back of the car. The middle seat has three seats: two bucket seats on either side of a jump seat in the center that has storage and can be folded down to serve as an armrest.

The two front buckets include armrests and can be manually operated or electrically operated on more expensive variants. The seats may all be adjusted to increase luggage space and legroom.

The center or second row features an extensive adjustment range to maximize leg room for both double and third-row passengers. The back two rows of seats may be folded to create a cargo platform.

If needed, the chairs may easily be removed. Like an airline seatback table, each front seat has a fold-down table that can be accessed from the second row. Although the Toyota cabin is reasonably practical, it lacks some of Nissan more opulent amenities. This car has many useful features, including privacy curtains for the back windows and windscreen. Two rows of three lamps are positioned above each row of chairs, providing enough lighting. The cargo light is also in the back of the vehicle, lower on the driver side.

Fore and aft climate controls and an entertainment center that can be seen from the second and third-row seats complete the cabin. The driver-side front dashboard and the back of the console both include door controls. Additionally, doors may be made to open electrically by only moving the door lever. The external key fob can also be used to control activation wirelessly.

Exterior

The Alphard seems a little van-like to drive because it is tall and narrow. A little body roll occurs. Although it is not hazardous nor unpleasant, it is not intended to corner very sharply. The suspension is robust and does an excellent job of absorbing road imperfections.

You will notice how huge and lengthy the Alphard feels while in town. Reversing cameras and parking sensors are helpful, but we advise opting for a vehicle with an additional front and side camera system as an option.

Although there are aftermarket choices, we could not locate an official tow rating for the Alphard. These are rated at 1,600 kg braked and 700 kg unbraked (a medium-sized garden trailer) (a medium-size trailer boat). All-wheel-drive model installations need a bit more skill and could be more expensive.

The Toyota provides a rear-mounted, overhead convex mirror for viewing obstacles outside. This extra safety function serves as a supplement to the backup camera in the hatch rear view. The center-mounted display shows the image captured by the camera. Where necessary, a backup alarm is also supplied.

Lighting, including side signal indicator lights, is included in the side view mirrors. The low-swept front spoiler and side panels restrict the vehicle off-road potential, which turns the four-wheel drive model into an all-weather, boulevard four-wheeler.

Driving Experience

The Toyota Alphard had a 4.84-meter overall length, a 2.9-meter wheelbase, a 1.8-meter height, a 1.9-meter breadth, and a 1.9-meter width. The king might limit access in some places. For instance, Japan multi-story parking height regulations are just 1.55 m, which is significantly less than the 1.8 sizes of MPVs. The boxy van stylings height and breadth combination make very comparable handling.

The front-wheel drive system Toyota has mastered in many of its cars helps the Alphard handle nicely. On four-wheel drive vehicles, improved traction is achieved in slick conditions. The Alphard received favorable reviews for its drivability. Considering the vehicle peak weight, handling was excellent. Except for a rattling that one driver noticed, the journey was silent. The Toyota Alphard fuel consumption is economical compared to other cars in this category.

Safety

Because the Alphard was only marketed as a new car in a few select locations, we could not locate any local or worldwide crash ratings for this generation. Front and side airbags, electronic stability control, and anti-lock brakes are all excellent safety features.

Although it comes with most automobiles, electronic stability control is not a standard feature on the X model. Specific versions lack an off button. Turn the ignition on, watch for the "VSC" light to illuminate, and then go out to see if a car has it.

The center rear position only has a lap-type belt, which provides less protection than a shoulder-type, and there are no ISOFIX mounts in the back seats.

Price In Tanzania

The Toyota Alphard price in Tanzania is between 7,000,000,00 Tanzanian shillings and  7,459,928,55 Tanzanian shillings, it can vary according to model, usage, and condition of the car.

Conclusion

Toyota Alphard is overall a luxurious car. Your needs and your budget will determine the car you purchase. However, you may get value for your money with the Alphard. Toyota Estima and Toyota Voxy are two more vehicles that can accomplish the same task as the Alphard but are less readily available.
