Mazda released the first van in 1966. It was later manufactured in two models such as the F800 and F1000. also released an electric based model of the van. It was based on the same engine used by the Mazdas Familia small car range. The production of the car ended in 1975 due to the finance problems faced by the Mazda and the policies for the emissions control for 1975.

The Mazda bongos fitted with the rear-engine were based on the full chassis. These were very strong and very capable of carrying half a ton. Since these lacked maintenance and are prone to rust there are a very number of these bongos available now. Both the Bongo and the 1000 pickup chassis are very different except the same brake components and front suspension.
