The 90s were a time when Mitsubishi was a leading car manufacturer, and the models were highly sought after. From 1994 to 2000, Mitsubishi Motors produced the Mitsubishi FTO, a front-wheel-drive coupe with a front compartment engine. The demand for a used Mitsubishi FTO twenty years since production ceased indicates its popularity and durability during its original run.

Mitsubishi Motors had originally planned to keep the FTO exclusive to the Japanese domestic market. However, its popularity via grey market imports in UK, Ireland, Hong Kong, Australia, and New Zealand led to eventual distribution via official dealers in those regions at the end of FTO’s production run.

The name is a callback to the Galant FTO coupe of 1971, which was the first sports car by Mitsubishi Motors. It stands for Fresh Touring Origination.

Mitsubishi FTO Review

Despite production ceasing in 2000, there is a market for a used Mitsubishi FTO among car enthusiasts. So if you’re looking for a used Mitsubishi FTO, there are quite a few choices available due to the number of different trims available for each production year. Additionally, the tail-end of the production cycle from 1997 to 2000 saw the Mitsubishi FTO receive a facelift.  The Mitsubishi FTO review will talk about the different engine and transmission options available and things to keep in mind when buying a used Mitsubishi FTO

Engine and transmission

All variants of a used Mitsubishi FTO will come equipped with one of three possible engine types. You can either find a 1.8L 4G93 SOHC 16V I4 engine, or the improved 2.0L 6A 12 DOHC 24V V6 engine, or the consumer favorite 2.0L 6A12 DOHC 24V MIVEC V6 engine.

Transmission options were either a classic 5-speed manual transmission or one of the two automatic transmissions depending on which year your used Mitsubishi FTO is from. For example, all FTOs from 1994 to 1997 had the option of a 4-speed INVEC II automatic transmission. While the FTO cars produced from 1997 to 2000 had the option of a 5-speed F5A5 automatic transmission.

Things to check when buying a used Mitsubishi FTO

The first to check is the engine. Ensure that the engine revs cleanly and there is no smoke. If the engine while idling sounds rough, then the control valves and sensors may need cleaning. It is recommended that upon purchase, at the very least, replace the oil and filter.

The second thing is the gearbox. Be sure to cycle through the gears of the used Mitsubishi FTO and check for noises or unnecessary resistance. It is recommended that the automatic transmission fluid be replaced every year to two. Additionally, an annual cleaning of the input and output sensors.

The electrics also need to be checked, and if the infotainment system is upgraded, this is doubly necessary. In addition, the central locking system on these cars can be finicky, so it needs to be checked. And lastly, if your used Mitsubishi FTO is post 97, check to see that the relay box under the bonnet has the right fuses.

Now for under the car. If the anti-roll bar suspension bushes are worn, there will be noise, and vibrations will be felt through the brake pedal. This noise and vibration are indicative of warped brake discs, which is a common issue. If it’s too badly worn, it can only be fixed by a competent fabricator as replacements are very hard to come by.

The price of a used Mitsubishi FTO

The Mitsubishi FTO price has quite the variable range. Therefore, the price point is dependent on several factors such as year of production, exact model variant, and distance traveled. Additionally, local import duty and taxes play a part in the price as well. A used Mitsubishi FTO can carry a price tag from 5000 US dollars to 16,000 US dollars. The pre 97 models tend to be less pricey than the models available from the production run of 98 to 2000.
