The Volkswagen Polo is categorized as a supermini car manufactured by the German automaker Volkswagen. It was first released in 1975. It is made available in different markets including Europe in four body styles such as sedan, hatchback, estate and coupe.

 

First Generation Of Volkswagen Polo

VOLKSWAGEN POLOThe first generation polo was released in 1975 and remained in production till 1981. The Polo was produced in Wolfsburg at the Volkswagen plant. It was made available with three different engines 895 cc, straight-4 petrol, 1093 cc straight-4 petrol, 37 kW and 1272 cc, straight-4 petrol. The modified version of the Mark I Polo was released in 1979. It had a new dashboard design, a different front grille and plastic bumpers.

 

Second Generation of Volkswagen Polo

The second generation Volkswagen Polo was released in 1981 as Polo Mark II. The big change that the generation experienced was the addition of a wagon body style. It was a three door vehicle. The name “Derby” was no longer used and the sedan models were now known as the Polo Classic.

 

The modified version of the second generation model was released in the 1990. It was offered in three different body styles. The saloon was only manufactured in Spain till 1992. The Polo GT was known as the best performance model. After the release of the Mark IIF, a new model of the supercharged G40 was included. It was offered with alloy wheels, a bee-sting aerial and “G40” badges in red on the front and rear.

The third generation Volkswagen polo was known as Mark III Polo or Typ 6N. It was released in 1994. It was based on the latest chassis offered in 3- and 5-door hatchback models.

 

The saloon and the estate models of the Volkswagen polo were renamed as SEAT Córdobas and were released in the market about one year back. The Volkswagen Lupo was based on the smaller version of the Typ 6N. The modified version of the third generation Volkswagen polo was launched in 1999. The hatchback models received new bumpers, headlights and a new interior based inspired by that of the Lupo designs. There were slight changes to the exterior styling. Standard features included twin airbags while the estate and saaloon models had a completely new interior. In UK both the models of the Mark III Polo remained strong competitor to the Nissan Micra and Fiat Punto.

 

Fourth Generation Of Volkswagen Polo 

Volkswagen released its fourth generation polo in 2001, also known as Typ 9N. It has many structural similarities with the Golf MK4. The most noticeable feature was the rounded headlights. The Volkswagen polo also released SUV model of the vehicle. It was known as Polo Dune in the United Kingdom, Polo Fun and Polo Soho in Spain.

 

Fifth Generation Of Volkswagen Polo

Volkswagen released its fifth generation polo also known as Typ 6R in 2009 at the Show. It was the first polo car to be announced as the European Car of the Year. New features include seats that can be folded down, increased boot capacity and reduced weight
