The Toyota Carina was for a long time one of the most successful models of the Japanese market leader Toyota as a medium class car. Whoever gives importance to safety technology should look for the eighth generation of Toyota Carina cars sold from 1996 to 2001. They already have two drivers airbags, ABS and ESP on board. The vehicles of the predecessor generations are occasionally available at a particularly low price.

The Long-Lasting Sedan

The Japanese manufacturer offered a sedan under the name of Toyota Carina from 1979 to 2001, a mid-class sedan, which was finally replaced by the Toyota Avensis. Within this time span, Toyota produced a total of eight vehicle generations.

Used Carina

Used cars of the first five generations up to 1987 come today only very isolated in the sale. It was only from the sixth series, which ran as a Carina II between 1988 and 1992, older vehicles are increasingly available. Not infrequently, Toyota Carina is offered with more than 200,000 km of running performance over the course of the year, which is indicative of the technical longevity of the model.

Engine Specifications

The sixth-generation Toyota Carina II was offered with gasoline engines of 1.45 to 2.0 liters displacement and a 2.0-liter diesel engine. At the beginning of this generation the engines had no exhaust gas cleaning. From 1989, all gasoline engines were equipped with catalytic converters and switched from carburettors to injection. Among the petrol, the 1.6 16V with 98 hp is particularly fuel-efficient. This first so-called magermix motor runs in partial load operation with a lean mixture and therefore particularly economical.

Toyota Carina for Europe

From the end of 1992 to 1997, the seventh Toyota Carina was on offer. This model ("E" for Europe), referred to as "Carina E", meets all the requirements of the European market. This includes low fuel consumption, which is why Toyota has been focusing more on lean mix engines.

As the first Toyota, this car was produced entirely in Europe. The Toyota Carina E is available as a sedan with rear hatch, with tailgate and as a combination. As a further gasoline engine, Toyota offers a powerful 2.0-liter engine, which as a "GTI" delivers up to 175 hp. In 1996 the Toyota Carina E experienced a model maintenance, in which passive safety has been brought up to date. The car received side impact protection, airbags for driver and passenger as well as belt-tensioners with electronic release sensors.
