Land Rover- The Journey from Specific Model to Company

Land Rover originally came as a model of Rover Company in the year 1948. The Rover Company was later acquired by British Leyland Motor Corporation followed by Leyland Motor Corporation taking over. Though the acquisitions were happening but this tough off road vehicle was still ruling hearts.
Seeing this, the Land Rover was introduced as a company in 1978. The models that were produced under its name are as follows:

Land Rover Defender

The year 1983 brought in Land Rover Defender that was initially called Land Rover Ninety and Land Rover One Ten. The ninety and one ten represented the wheelbase inches. It was renamed in 1991 as Defender 90 and Defender 110. As Defender it was launched in car bodies of 3 door and 5 door station wagon, 2 door single and 4 door double cabin pickup along with 2 door hardtop. The varied engine included 2.5 L I4 technology as a turbo diesel with 107 hp from1990 till 1994 and 111 hp from 1994 to 1998. The I5 technology also brought in 2.5 L, 2.2 L and 2.4 L having horsepower of 122 hp.

Land Rover Discovery

It is an off-road SUV of mid size available in market introduced by manufacturer Land Rover. It came as Discovery 1, 2, 3 and 4 with refinement in the 5 door option to a level that turned out to be style friendly experience. The initial days brought in the SUV as a 3 door option however it was identified that five door one is most preferred. Initially the engine available included 2.0L in Rover T series I4 technology with the 2.5L 200 Tdi TD I4 from 1989 to 1994 and 300 Tdi from 1994 to 1999. The later engines include 3.5 L, 3.9 L and 4.0 L in V8 technology.

The Discovery 2 had engine of 2.5L Td5 with 4.0 L and 4.8 L Rover V8. The Discovery 3 had 2.7 L Ford TD V6, 4.0 L Ford Cologne V6 and 4.4L Jaguar AJ-V8. The 2.7 L remained same though the other two had been improved to 3.0 and 5.0 L respectively.

Range Rover Sport and Evoque

The Range Rover Sport was introduced in 2005 as a luxury SUV being available in front engine, four wheel drive making performance happen to perfection. The Evoque on the other hand was introduced as Compact SUV in the year 2011 both as 4X4 and 2X2.


The sports Range Rover brought in 4.2L, 4.4L and 5.0L in petrol engine along with the 2.7L, 3.0L and 3.6L in diesel engine. The Evoque had 2.0 L in petrol and 2.2L in diesel option. The petrol engine worked on fuel efficiency while the diesel engine had more focus on towing and performance.

The Land Rover cars over the years have gained greater popularity carving niche through offering world class features with expected level of price.
