It has a light weight and hardened body, improved chassis and brakes and a tuned engine. The EK 9 Civic was also known as the sixth generation EK Civic. The base model was known as the JDM Civic 3-door hatchback called SiR and was code named as EK4. The Civic SiRs was transformed into a type R. The Honda Civic Type R was released in 1997 and had its chassis as the EK9. It had many similarities with the Integra Type R DC2/ JDM DB8 such as B16B engine, close ratio gearbox and front helical limited-slip differential. The interior had red Type R floor mats, red seats, red door cards, a Momo leather-wrapped steering wheel and a titanium shift knob. In 1998, Honda released the Civic Type R Motor Sports edition. It was offered with steel wheels, there were no power windows, no air conditioning, no radio and no power steering. The standard type R interior had Momo steering wheel, Recaro bucket seats and red carpet with matching door trim. Type RX model was given a CD player, body colored retractable electric door mirrors, power windows, auto air conditioning, key-less entry unlock system, aluminium sports pedals, and a carbon type centre panel.
