Acura ZDX - Luxury Crossover

The Acura ZDX is categorized as a mid-size luxury crossover designed by Honda. It was released at the New York International Auto Show  in 2009. Acura define the vehicle as one that "blurs the distinction between coupe, sedan and sport utility vehicle”. The Acura ZDX is the first Acura to have six speed automatic transmissions, some special luxury items and ventilated seats.

THE RECENT ACURA ZDX

The first generation Acura was produced from 2010 to 2013. It was charged with a 3.7-liter V6. The only transmission available was a six-speed automatic with manual shift control. The ZDX was equipped with Acuras Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD) system that flawlessly shifted power to each single wheel to make handling and grip more efficient.

Standard features offered on the Acura included a panoramic sunroof, 19-inch wheels, a rearview camera, xenon headlights, dual-zone automatic climate control, leather upholstery, power heated front seats, a power tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, power liftgate and bluetooth.

The standard entertainment features include satellite radio, in-dash six-CD changer, audio system, an auxiliary audio jack and a USB/iPod interface. The optional features included a navigation system, an upgraded audio system, keyless ignition and entry, a multiview parking camera, ventilated front seats, an electronically adjustable suspension and an upgraded audio system.

In spite of its attractive sportier looks it lacked proper cargo space. Even when the seats are folded flat, the cargo space is not spacious enough when compared with other SUVs. However the grip and control were very inspiring but overall it was not found as a better performer.

PRODUCTION MODEL

In 2009, Acura released five teasers to project it globally. It was released as a "Luxury Four-Door Sports Coupe" with the name as ZDX. The announced model was equipped with a SOHC VTEC V6 all-aluminum engine along with a 6-speed automatic transmission, offered in a Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD), 19-inch, 7-spoke alloy wheels, panoramic glass roof with movable sunshades, power tailgate, hand-stitched leather interior and HandsFreeLink Bluetooth connectivity. Entertainment features included were CD player, USB audio interface with iPod integration, AM/FM/XM Satellite Radio. The sales initiated in 2009.

Technology package offers a Navigation System along with the voice recognition, a new multi-view rear camera and an Acura/ELS Surround premium audio system. The Advanced Package is offered with high quality safety features such as an Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Collision Mitigating Braking System (CMBS) and blind spot monitoring system.

LACK OF PRACTICALITY

According to the EPA estimates the 2013 Acura has 16/23 mpg city/highway. It is a comfortable ride but considered as a vehicle with limited utilities. It is not comfortable in the rear of the vehicle and therefore the multi rear view camera is appreciated. However the luxuriously designed interior is very inspiring but the number of buttons on the dashboard is more than required. The 2013 Acura MDX has many features similar to the features available on the ZDX but the MDX has capacious cargo area, seven seats and generous rear seat space.
