Introduction:

The Toyota Auris has been in the limelight ever since it was introduced in the late 2000s. Toyota markets the Auris as a sub-compact family hatchback, it is based on the Corolla platform but the boot space has been compromised for a marginal increase in practicality and increased rear legroom. The Auris was introduced in 2006, as a big brother for the Yaris hatchback range, offering larger capacity engines for effortless cruising on motorways, and a more premium interior for that extra bit of luxury that one expects from a posh hatchback. In terms of technical specs, the Auris lands solely in the Alfa Romeo 147 and Volkswagen Golf class, so you can expect it to be a little sporty.

The 2015 Toyota Auris, First Impressions:

The new car follows the same design philosophies as the outgoing version, but it brings in funky new themes to garner in some youth, and we think Toyota has finally cracked it. The brand new Auris carries a major portion of its parts list from the new Corolla sedan, which is quite a handsome car in its class. This kind of shows up on the Auris too, it isn’t exactly sleek, but the body seems well proportioned. There is that distinct “sharp” look to its face, but it blends well with the overall curves of the body. We can safely say that you won’t be getting any regrets being seen around in one.

First impressions… Quite good really! The fit and finish is very Toyota-ish, nothing to complain about. The doors open and close with a satisfying thud that signifies this is a quality vehicle, the panel gaps could be credit card slots for all we know. The interior is a comfortable place to be, and though it tries hard to appear unique and less “bland” than it actually is, it never quite cuts it. Toyota should really drop its usual selection of grey upholstery… the 80s are long gone.

Engine:

There is a choice of 6 different engines in the new Auris. The Japanese home version gets up-rated 1.5 and 1.8 liter petrol variants while European markets are set to receive the 1.4 diesel, 1.6 petrol and 1.8 liter hybrid engines from Toyota’s new lineup. Our test car had the 1.8 liter petrol not quite, the 1.8 liter engine is carried over from the previous generation Corolla with a few revisions, and though the engine gives lumps of torque at low revs and is ideal for economical long distance cruises, it doesn’t really seem eager to go anywhere above 5000RPM. So for the driving enthusiast, those 2nd gear pulls are not really fun, the engine seems too loud and unrefined. When it comes to sportiness, the VW and Alfa Romeo have it pinned to the floor.

Transmission:

There is a choice of 4-5 speed automatics and 5-6 speed manuals. The automatic is extremely sluggish and it takes the car ages to gather any speed at all, we reckon manual transmissions are much better here. There is also an optional CVT 7 speed gearbox, but we don’t think it’s worth paying that entire extra.

Verdict:

The Auris is an excellent all round car, it provides ample amounts of storage space inside the cabin, has a comfortable ride, and with a commendable fuel economy, it is an ideal family car.
