BMW (Bavarian Motor Works) is a German automobile, motorcycle manufacturing company which was founded in 1917 by Franz Josef Popp. Headquarter of BMW is located in Munich, Bavaria, Germany. BMW also owns Mini and Rolls-Royce Motor is also the subsidiary of BMW. As in 2012, BMW produced 1.48 million automobiles and 0.12 million motorcycles including all its brands.

BMW was formed as a business entity by restricting of the Rapp Motorenwerke which was an aircraft manufacturing firm in 1917. The circular Blue and White emblem of BMW was taken from Rapp Motorenwerke’s logo and the colors of the Bavarian flag. BMW was forced to cease production of aircraft engines after the end of First World War. Then the company shifted to the production of motorcycle in 1923 till 1928-29. After the lifting of the restrictions, BMW’s first launch was BMW Dixi car which was based on Austin 7. BMW Dixi was licensed from Austin Motor Company in Birmingham, England.

By 1959, the automotive division of BMW was facing tough time due to financial difficulties and the liquidation of the company was in discussion. However, the shareholders meeting decided to carry on the operations and try to cash the economy at its extreme. Then, the rights to produce Italian Iso Isetta were bought which helped the company to financially stabilize. Leading to this success, company acquired Hans Glas Company who produced timing belt and camshafts.

In 1994, BMW bought the British Rover Group (manufacturer of current Rover, Land Rover and MG Rover) which was owned for six years and in year 2000, all the brands of the group were sold to Ford and Phoenix due to huge losses which were caused to BMW. Used BMW Cars are as popular and demanded as new BMW cars. Due to the Japanese car license renewal strategy , the BMW used cars are well-maintained and runs for a longer span of time.

In, February 2009 the chief designer, Chris Bangle announce his departure and replaced by Adrian van Hooydonk who was Bangle’s former right hand man in the company. Bangle was very well known for the radical famous designs such as BMW Z4 and the 7 Series.
